Several YFoot members enjoyed "apple hunting" on Nov. 24, 2001, with some 10 visitors from abroad. Where we headed was an apple orchard of Mr. Kubomura at Tateyama, in a western suburb of Yonezawa. Fine weather, branches sagging from the weight of ripe "Fuji" apples - everybody agreed it was a perfect day. I was impressed to hear a lady from. Colorado say that she never had a delicious and lovely-shaped apple back in her home state. Ms. Doris asked me what the wooden cartons by the apple trees were for. Mr. Kubomura told us that the cartons housed bee's eggs, which would hatch in the cartons when Spring comes, and new bees would pollinate the apple trees nearby. "Ah so desu ka!" After leaving the orchard, we visited a small restaurant in Toh-yama
for lunch, including Onigiri (rice balls), Imoni (Japanese taro cookout,
Yonezawa people's Autumn delicacy) and tsukemono (Japanese pickles). It
so turned out that making Onigiri and having them was quite an unexpected
but enjoyable meal we had together. A nice day it was, indeed. |
